The Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), Andy Street has joined forces with Minerva, one of the UK’s largest Business Angel network focused in the Midlands, to encourage entrepreneurs and investors to support local companies as Angel investors.
£1.8bn was invested in 2017 through the Enterprise Investment Scheme, which provides individuals with tax incentive to invests in start-ups and growth-orientated companies. Of this £1.8bn around 2.6% was invested in the West Midlands with the majority, £1bn, being invested in the South East.
Together with WMCA, we hope to stimulate a greater interest within our locality community to support regional opportunities, and thus prevent the flight of capital and expertise down South. In the absence of domestic support, we run the risk of losing some of our best talent and innovative businesses as they are forced to relocate in search of growth capital. The objective is to be part of the equation so that “What is made in the West Midlands should be encouraged and helped to stay in the West Midlands.”
On the 22nd January 2019, at the University of Warwick, the Mayor of WMCA Andy Street will open the event at which 6 local companies seeking growth capital will pitch to potential investors.
